Dental Insurance Tips

2015 is almost over…can you believe it? Where did the time go? In our fast paced lives it’s important to stop and take a moment to ‘smell the flowers’ sometimes. It’s also important to stop and schedule a dental appointment with your Ottawa dentist. Your Ottawa dentist would recommend that you see them at least twice a year for a cleaning and check-up.

If you are lucky enough to work somewhere that provides for at least a percentage of your dental benefit allowance then that is another reason to make sure you visit your dentist regularly. The amount that you are able to claim annually is usually a fixed amount that doesn’t roll over to the next year (basically, if you don’t use it you’ll lose it!).

If you are someone who happens to be without dental insurance, fear not as there are still options out there for you. In addition to purchasing third party dental insurance on your own, here are some other options you can consider:

Create an emergency dental fund, and put aside money every month. “Unpredictable things happen, and you have to have a way to pay for it,” says Julia Hallisy, D.D.S., president of the nonprofit Empowered Patient Coalition in San Francisco. “You could bite on a peach pit and crack a tooth.

Check community health centers. Some offer low-cost dental care but may have limited services and, possibly, waiting lists.

Try university dental schools. Many charge 30 to 40 percent less than private dentists, and you’ll be treated by supervised students. “The quality of care is excellent,” says Judith Jones, D.D.S., professor of dentistry at Boston University and an American Dental Association spokeswoman.”

The best bet is to try to put aside money each month so you can either pay an Ottawa dentist or pay for the third-party insurance that will provide you with the coverage for an Ottawa dentist, as they are the best at providing full and professional dental examinations, diagnostics and remedies.
