What to Expect When You Get Dental Implants

If you have missing or badly broken teeth, dental implants are an excellent treatment option. Implants involve inserting titanium posts into the jawbone and then attaching artificial teeth (dental crowns) to the implants. Dental implants are extremely popular among patients who need teeth replaced because they look, feel and act more like natural teeth than traditional treatment options such as dental crowns, bridges and dentures.

Even though dental implants are a great solution to damaged and missing teeth, the process of getting them can be intimidating since it involves multiple appointments, surgery, and wait times between appointments. However, if you know what will be involved, you can prepare yourself in advance for the implant installation process. So to help you get ready, here is what you can expect to happen when you get dental implants:

Appointment 1
After an initial consultation to determine if implants are right for you, an appointment will be booked to insert the titanium posts into your jawbone. To do this, a dentist will make incisions wherever the implants will be located. The dental implants are placed into holes that have been drilled into the bone, and then the gums are stitched closed. After this surgery, there is a 3-6 month healing period where the implants integrate with the jawbone.

Appointment 2
Once the implants are fully integrated and secure in the bone, a second appointment is scheduled to attach abutments to the dental implants. An abutment is essentially a post that is screwed into the implants, and is what will connect the replacement dental crowns to the dental implants. During this appointment, your dentist will also take master impressions of the implants in order to make your permanent dental crowns. You need to wait 2-3 weeks for the dental crowns to be fabricated, but you will receive temporary dental crowns to wear in the meantime.

Appointment 3
When your custom dental crowns have been created, you will have a third appointment for the final attachment of the crowns onto the dental implants. At this appointment, the process of installing dental implants is completed, and you are left with a beautiful, natural looking smile that will last a lifetime.

Subsequent Appointments
While the installation process for dental implants generally involves three appointments, your dentist may schedule several follow up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure that you are adjusting well to your implants and permanent dental crowns. These appointments may also involve cleaning and polishing to ensure oral hygiene is maintained over the long term.

A New Smile: The Invisalign Way

Everyone wants the perfect smile, but unfortunately we’re only human, and we inevitably have flaws. But luckily there is help; there have been great advances in the dental industry over the last decade. This innovation has enabled dentists to provide their patients with superior oral care. When it comes to straightening your teeth there are two predominant methods, traditional braces, and Invisalign. Both have their benefits, but Invisalign is undoubtedly the most effective approach.  If you’re considering straightening your teeth, be sure to use a reputable dentist. A quick internet search could direct you to the best dentist in Ottawa.  But be wary, many will claim they are the best dentist in Ottawa when it’s not necessarily true. With a little research you can easily find a well-established dentist.

Benefits of Invisalign over Traditional Braces

Discreet: Their innovative design allows you to straighten your teeth discreetly. Unlike standard braces Invisalign is nearly invisible.  You no longer have to be self-conscious or worry about your appearance; no one will know you’re even wearing them.

No restrictions: There are no food restrictions associated with Invisalign. You’re free to eat whatever you desire: sticky food, hard food, hot food, anything. Just simply remove your orthodontic aligner and you’re good to go.

Stylish: They’re more aesthetically pleasing and more comfortable than traditional braces. Its custom thermoplastic design allows for maximum benefit, with minimal interference. You don’t have to worry about any sharp metal poking or cutting your mouth, nothing but smooth orthotic aligners.

Invisalign alignerEasy to maintain: Unlike conventional metal braces, these invisible aligners are extremely easy to maintain and clean. Being able to remove your aligner at a moment’s notice is a huge benefit; this makes brushing and flossing a breeze. With braces, unwanted leftovers get stuck in between the joints and wires, making them very difficult to clean.

Simple to use: These aligners are an effective process of straightening your teeth. Patients wear a series of removable customized orthodontic aligners, for allotted periods of time. As their teeth shift into place the aligners are adjusted accordingly. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks, depending on the severity of the situation. No wires, elastics or metal, just clear thermoplastic and fantastic results.

Oral health isn’t something that should be taken lightly.  Be sure to use a well-respected dentist who has the knowledge and expertise to address you oral needs.  There are a number of dentists throughout the city, but make sure you choose the best dentist in Ottawa. Once you have located the best dentist in Ottawa, it’s just a matter of getting your first customer orthodontic aligner. From there it’s nothing but straight teeth and wide smiles.

In short, Invisalign braces are an innovative, effective and hassle free method of straightening your teeth. This proven-system can give you the smile you always dreamed of, make the right choice and choose Invisalign.
