Crowns: Not just for Royalty


They say ‘heavy is the head that wears the crown’ and when you give it real thought, it makes a lot of sense. The wearer of a crown is usually someone in power; the head of a royal family (or someone who thinks highly of themselves and randomly decides to start wearing a crown) and when you are born into that type of responsibility, it can be daunting. Having power can be great, if used responsibly. Thankfully the majority of us don’t have to worry about things of that nature.


The only crowns most people are concerned with are the ones in their mouths. Although these types of crowns do become a part of your head, they don’t make it heavier (physically or mentally). They do however provide a pleasing aesthetic for the tooth you chipped when you were younger. You know, from the time you rode your bike really fast, trying to keep up with your older siblings; shoelace got intertwined which made for a painful dismount, causing a chipped tooth.


Being a child can be hard enough on its own, but having to deal with chipped and broken teeth is a reality that sometimes must be faced. I personally can relate to the bike incident and having a chipped tooth; my dentist however decided against capping the tooth, stating that ‘it will continue to grow and even itself out with the other tooth’ and for the most part he was right. I was confused with his decision at the time, but am glad he made it.


If you have a chipped or broken tooth, getting it capped with a crown may be the best option for you. However, it may not be. Consult with your local Ottawa dental professional and discuss your options.

Reasons Why People Don’t Floss


Habits are an important part of our life. They are easily formed and can be hard to break. The key is to form habits that are healthy and good for our bodies; however this is rarely the case. Exercising daily for at least thirty minutes is a great habit that everyone should get into. The reality is that as people’s lives get increasingly busier, it gets harder and harder to fit exercise time into a daily schedule. By the time the end of the day hits, the only ‘exercise’ you get may be adjusting your position on the couch and changing the channel on your television.


The same can be said about flossing. If it was never a part of your daily oral hygiene regimen, it can be a difficult thing to start and maintain on a regular basis. Here are some of the reasons people may give for why they don’t floss as much as they should:


It’s ‘uncomfortable’ or ‘too time consuming’

The idea of essentially having both hands in your mouth with a piece of floss is uncomfortable for some, which keeps them from doing it. Also, after they’ve spent what they believe is a decent amount of time brushing and rinsing their mouths they don’t want to dedicate another minute or two toward flossing.


‘My teeth feel clean enough after I brush’

The benefit of brushing your teeth is felt immediately after you’ve finished; they look and feel cleaner. Sometimes you don’t get the same satisfaction from flossing (unless you’ve recently eaten popcorn or something with sesame or poppy seeds in it) which keeps people from flossing regularly.


What’s important to remember is that these are your teeth and gums; they don’t belong to anyone else. The only way to maintain their health is to make a habit of taking care of them properly which includes regular brushing, flossing and visits to your local Ottawa dental professional. Implement flossing into your oral care routine slowly, but make sure to be consistent so it will eventually become a habit. Once that is achieved, you’ll be on the road to a healthier mouth for the long haul.
